Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but knowing how to handle them can make all the difference. Whether it’s an issue with your appliances or a direct injury to your mouth, here’s how to manage these situations effectively.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Sometimes, orthodontic appliances may become broken or bent during treatment. If you experience any issues such as:
- Loose bands or brackets
- Broken or poking wires
- Irritating tie wires
Call our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. For your convenience and the convenience of others, walk-in emergencies cannot be accommodated.
Temporary Solutions Until Your Appointment
Here are some tips to address common problems until we can see you:
- Irritating Tie Wire: Cover the wire with beeswax or tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
- Loose Band or Bracket: Leave it in place and call our office to schedule a visit. If needed, we’ll reattach the appliance.
- Broken or Poking Archwire: Use a pencil eraser to gently bend the wire away from sensitive areas. If necessary, sanitize a pair of nail clippers and carefully trim the wire. Call us if the issue persists or if you’re unsure.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
In the event of a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, follow these steps:
- Ice the Area: Apply ice immediately to reduce swelling.
- Contact Your Dentist: Your regular dentist should be your first call. They may need to take an x-ray to assess the extent of the injury.
- For injuries like displaced, knocked-out, or fractured teeth, your dentist is equipped with the necessary materials and anesthesia to treat these situations.
- Follow-Up with Us: If your orthodontic appliances are dislodged or damaged due to the injury, contact us after your dentist has addressed the issue. We’ll adjust or replace your appliances as soon as possible to ensure your comfort and continued progress.
